Most household electrical faults start small, a flickering light here, a tripping switch there, and are easy to ignore until they become expensive or dangerous. The good news is that the most common problems in Illawarra homes are preventable once you know what causes them. Here are five we see every week across Wollongong, Shellharbour and the South Coast, and how to stop them before they start.
1. Flickering or dimming lights
Flickering lights are usually caused by loose connections, an overloaded circuit, or ageing light fittings. Occasionally it points to a bigger issue at the switchboard.
How to prevent it: avoid running too many high-draw appliances on one circuit, replace old halogen fittings with efficient LED lighting, and have any persistent flickering checked, especially if it affects several rooms at once, which can signal a wiring or switchboard fault.
2. Circuit breakers or safety switches that keep tripping
A breaker that trips now and then is doing its job. One that trips constantly usually means an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, or moisture getting into wiring or outdoor points.
How to prevent it: spread heavy loads (heaters, air conditioners, kitchen appliances) across different circuits, unplug a suspect appliance to test it, and make sure your home has modern safety switches (RCDs). If tripping continues, book an electrical safety inspection and fault find rather than resetting it repeatedly.
3. Not enough power points (and overloaded power boards)
Older homes were wired for a fraction of today’s devices, so double adaptors and daisy-chained power boards are everywhere. Overloaded boards are a leading cause of electrical fires.
How to prevent it: add properly installed outlets where you actually need them instead of relying on power boards. Extra power points are a quick, affordable job and far safer than overloading a single outlet.
4. An old switchboard with ceramic fuses
If your switchboard still has rewireable ceramic fuses and no safety switches, it is working harder than it should and offers far less protection than modern standards require.
How to prevent problems: upgrade to circuit breakers and RCDs. A switchboard upgrade adds shock protection, capacity for modern appliances, air conditioning and EV charging, and is one of the most worthwhile electrical investments in an older home.
5. Warm, discoloured or buzzing power points
This one is not a maintenance issue, it is a warning. A power point that feels warm, looks discoloured, buzzes, or gives off a faint burning smell usually means loose wiring or arcing behind the wall, which is a genuine fire risk.
What to do: stop using the outlet immediately and call a licensed electrician. If you notice burning smells, smoke or sparks, treat it as urgent and call our 24/7 emergency electrician line straight away.
The simplest prevention of all
Most of these problems are caught early by a periodic electrical safety inspection, especially for homes over 20 years old or recently purchased. A quick check of your switchboard, wiring and outlets gives you peace of mind and usually costs a fraction of an emergency repair.
