Common air conditioning faults

Not cooling or heating

Often a blocked filter, an outdoor unit choked with leaves or dust, or the wrong mode on the remote. If those are fine, it may be a fault in the unit or its power supply, and we will track it down.

Leaking water

Usually a blocked drain line or a dirty filter causing the coil to ice up and then drip. Turn the unit off and call us before the water marks the wall or ceiling.

Error codes or flashing lights

The unit is telling you something is wrong. Write down the code or count the flashes, switch it off and give us a call. It helps us bring the right parts.

Bad smells

A musty smell usually means mould or dust on the filters and coil, and a clean fixes it. A burning smell is different, switch the unit off at the isolator and call us straight away.

Strange noises

Rattles and buzzing can come from loose panels, a worn fan, debris in the outdoor unit or a bracket that has worked loose. Squealing or grinding needs a look sooner rather than later.

Tripping the power

If the safety switch or circuit breaker trips when the air con starts, there is an electrical fault in the unit, the wiring or the circuit. This is where an electrician makes the difference.

What an air conditioning service includes

• Clean the filters and check them for wear
• Clean the indoor coil and fan where they can be reached
• Clear and test the drain line
• Check the outdoor unit for salt corrosion, debris and loose fixings
• Check the electrical connections, isolator and circuit
• Test cooling and heating and check the air temperature at the outlet
• Let you know plainly about anything that needs attention

How often to service near the coast

Salt air is tough on air conditioners. It corrodes the fins on the outdoor coil, the screws and the brackets, and a corroded coil cannot shift heat properly. Across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven we suggest:

• A service at least once a year for most homes
• Every six months for units close to the beach or facing the ocean
• Before summer for holiday rentals and units that work hard in the warmer months
• Cleaning the indoor filters yourself every few weeks between services

A lot of air con breakdowns are not really an air con problem. They are a loose connection, a failing isolator, an undersized circuit, a tired switchboard or water getting into a fitting outside.
