Split System Installation in Wollongong and Shellharbour
A split system is the simplest way to cool a hot bedroom or warm a cold living room. IllaVolt Electrical supplies and installs split system air conditioners across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and the Shoalhaven, and because we are licensed electricians, the power side is done properly as part of the same visit. Call 0480 005 282 to book a quote visit.
What is included in a split system install
Every air conditioner installation we do covers the whole job, not just hanging the unit on the wall:
- A quote visit to look at the room, the wall and your switchboard
- Mounting the indoor head and setting the outdoor unit on a bracket or pad
- Running the pipes, cable and drain neatly between them
- A new circuit and isolator where the unit needs one
- A check of your switchboard and safety switches
- Testing in cooling and heating mode, then a full tidy up
- A handover so you know the remote, the settings and how to clean the filters
You deal with one licensed electrician from the first visit to the last test, with no second trade to coordinate.
Choosing the right size for the room
A unit that is too small runs flat out on a 35 degree day and still leaves the room warm. One that is too big switches on and off and never settles. We look at the room size, ceiling height, insulation, windows and which way the room faces, then recommend a size that keeps it comfortable without wasting power. West facing rooms that cop the afternoon sun often need more capacity than the floor area suggests.
Single and multi head systems
A single head system has one indoor unit and one outdoor unit, and suits a bedroom, a home office or an open living area. A multi head system runs two or more indoor units from one outdoor unit, handy when there is only room for one unit outside, on a small block or a townhouse. We will tell you which setup suits your home and how many rooms you want to cover now and later.
Reverse cycle heating for winter
Every split system we install is reverse cycle, so the same unit that cools you in January heats the room in July. For many homes it replaces an old gas or bar heater, and it warms the room quickly without the fumes. On cold winter mornings in the Illawarra, a timer that brings the living room up before you get out of bed makes a real difference.
What affects the cost of a split system
The main things that affect the price are:
- The size of the room and the capacity of the unit
- The wall type, brick, weatherboard, fibro or cladding
- How far the pipe run is between the indoor and outdoor units
- The power supply and whether a new circuit is needed
- Your switchboard capacity, older boards may need work first
If your board needs a switchboard upgrade, we tell you at the quote visit, never halfway through the job.
Brands we install
We supply and install split systems from the major brands and help you choose one that suits the room. For everything we do, see our air conditioning in Wollongong and Shellharbour.
Split system installation FAQs
How long does a split system install take?
A standard back to back install, where the indoor and outdoor units sit either side of the same wall, usually takes around half a day. Longer pipe runs, double storey homes, a new circuit or a multi head system take longer. We give you a clear idea of timing at the quote visit.
Do I need a dedicated circuit for a split system?
Larger split systems generally need their own circuit, and smaller units may be able to run from an existing one if it has the capacity. As licensed electricians, we check your switchboard and wiring at the quote visit and tell you exactly what your unit needs.
What is a back to back install?
It is when the indoor head goes on an outside wall and the outdoor unit sits directly behind it on the other side. It means the shortest pipe run, a neater finish and usually a quicker install. When that spot will not work, we can run the pipes further, through the roof or under the floor.
Where should the outdoor unit go near the coast?
Ideally somewhere with good airflow, out of direct salt spray and clear of garden beds and leaves. On homes close to the beach we look at the side that copes with the weather and use fixings suited to the salt air, so the unit lasts longer.
Can I add more split systems later?
Yes. Plenty of homes start with one unit in the living room and add bedrooms later. Tell us your plans at the quote visit and we will make sure your switchboard and power supply can handle more units down the track.
