Ducted Air Conditioning for Illawarra and Shoalhaven Homes

Ducted air conditioning keeps the whole house comfortable from one quiet system, with slim outlets in the ceiling and nothing on the walls. IllaVolt Electrical designs and installs ducted reverse cycle systems for homes across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Nowra and the Shoalhaven. As licensed electricians, we look after the power side and the unit, so there is no second trade to coordinate. It is part of our air conditioning in Wollongong and Shellharbour, from single rooms to whole homes. Call 0480 005 282 to book a design and quote visit.

Ducted or split, when ducted makes sense

A split system cools and heats one room or one open area. Ducted runs from a single unit in the roof or beside the house, through insulated ducts to an outlet in each room. It tends to make sense when:

  • You want three or more rooms heated and cooled, not just the living area
  • You would rather not have units on the walls
  • You are building, renovating or adding a second storey
  • You want one controller for the whole house

If you only need one or two rooms done, a split system is usually the simpler choice, and we will tell you so.

Zoning and controls

Zoning splits the house into areas, say living rooms and bedrooms, so you only heat or cool the zones you are using. Run the living areas through the day and switch to the bedrooms at night, so the system is not working to cool empty rooms. Most systems come with a wall controller, and many offer a phone app, so you can turn the house on before you get home from work or the beach.

New builds and existing homes

New builds

The easiest time to put in ducted air is while the frame is open. We work with your builder so the ducts, outlets, return air grille and power are planned before the plasterboard goes up.

Existing homes

Most single storey homes with a reasonable roof space can take ducted without major work. We get up in the roof at the quote visit to check access, height and where the unit and ducts will run.

Single and double storey

Single storey homes are the most straightforward. Double storey homes may need a second system or zone for upstairs, or a bulkhead to carry ducts between floors.

What affects the cost of ducted air conditioning

Every house is different, and the main factors are:

  • The size of the home and the number of rooms and zones
  • The capacity of the system
  • Roof space, access and whether it is single or double storey
  • Where the indoor and outdoor units can go
  • The controller you choose
  • Your power supply and switchboard capacity

A ducted system is a big load on the switchboard, so we check it at the quote visit and tell you upfront if it needs a switchboard upgrade.

Brands we install

We design and install ducted systems from the major brands and match the system to your home, not the other way around.

The design and quote process

  1. Visit. We look through the house and the roof space, check the switchboard and talk about how you use each room.
  2. Design. We size the system and plan the zones, outlet positions and unit locations.
  3. Quote. You get a written quote that spells out what is included.
  4. Install. We fit the system, wire it, test every zone and tidy up.
  5. Handover. We show you the controller and how to keep the system running well.

Ducted air conditioning FAQs

Can ducted air conditioning go into an older home?

In most cases, yes. Brick veneer, weatherboard and older fibro homes across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven often have enough roof space. The main thing we check is room in the ceiling for the unit and ducts, plus a spot outside for the outdoor unit.

How long does a ducted install take?

A typical single storey install takes a few days, depending on the size of the home and the roof access. Larger homes and double storey designs take longer. We give you a timeline with your quote so you can plan around it.

Is ducted more expensive to run than split systems?

Not necessarily. With zoning you only condition the rooms you are in, and a well sized system is efficient. Running every zone all day will cost more than one split system in one room, so it comes down to how you use it.

Does ducted air conditioning need a switchboard upgrade?

Sometimes. A ducted system draws more power than a split, and older boards may lack the capacity or safety switches. As licensed electricians we check your switchboard at the quote visit and include any work in the quote.

Does salt air affect a ducted system?

The outdoor unit is the part that cops it. Near the coast we place it where it gets airflow but less direct salt spray, use fixings suited to the conditions and recommend a regular service to keep corrosion in check.

Only need one or two rooms? Look at split system installation. Already have ducted and it is not working right? Book an air conditioning service.
